The discontinuation of hydrocortisone sodium phosphate (liquid hydrocortisone) has caused significant concern, with many people worried about the impact on patient safety. The Addison's Disease Self-Help Group is working with patients, clinicians and partner organisations to highlight these concerns and push for solutions.

Many people with adrenal insufficiency ask why there is not yet a simple, EpiPen-style emergency hydrocortisone injection for adrenal crisis. This page explores the current options available, the challenges involved in developing improved devices, and the work the ADSHG is doing to drive change.

Nearly 50 people affected by adrenal insufficiency attended an ADSHG emergency injection training event near Newcastle, delivered in partnership with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust. Led by Jane Craig and Joanne Wardle, the session combined Sick Day Rules education, hands-on injection training and peer support to help attendees feel more confident and prepared.

The ADSHG attended the Society for Endocrinology British Endocrine Conference (BES) 2026, sharing the experiences of people living with adrenal insufficiency and strengthening relationships with healthcare professionals and researchers.

The ADSHG was proud to support an Adrenal Insufficiency Study Day at University Hospital Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, helping to educate junior doctors and nurses about the identification and management of adrenal insufficiency. The event combined clinical education, patient experience and practical resources to improve awareness and patient care.

o mark its 40th anniversary, the Addison's Disease Self-Help Group took its Addison's Roadshow across the UK, bringing together members, healthcare professionals and volunteers in Glasgow, London, Cardiff and Newry. Each event offered a unique opportunity to learn from leading endocrine experts, receive emergency injection training, hear the latest research developments and connect with others living with Addison's disease and adrenal insufficiency.

Working with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the ADSHG has launched a free eLearning module to improve GP awareness of adrenal insufficiency and Addison's disease. The course helps healthcare professionals recognise symptoms, support earlier diagnosis and improve the management of adrenal crisis and long-term care.

Working with NHS Digital, the ADSHG helped update the NHS information on Addison's disease to reflect current best practice, expert guidance and patient needs. The updates include improved information on emergency injection kits, steroid emergency cards, Sick Day Rules and support services for people living with adrenal insufficiency.
